| The petrochemical industry plays an integral role in the manufacturing and consuming sectors. The industry, which produces chemicals with the use of oil and natural gas as major raw materials, consists of two major divisions. The primary petrochemical industry makes basic chemicals such as ethylene, usually from gas or oil. Secondary petrochemical industries transform basic petrochemicals into certain materials that can be used directly by other industries. The major raw materials (oil and natural gas) contain primarily of hydrocarbons, and such petrochemicals contain carbon or hydrogen or both. Petrochemicals can be modified into different industrial and consumer products, which includes paint, plastic, rubber, detergents, dyes, fertilizers, textiles, and even solvents. In addition, many compounds now considered as petrochemicals were formerly made out from wood and coal.
Most petrochemical industry plants today are located near oil-producing and oil refining areas around the world. Such petrochemical plants are costly, with some requiring at least more than $500 million to build. This industry became a hit after the war, with the increasing demand for synthetic consumer products. After which, manufacturers of many other chemical products were soon developed, including antifreeze, solvents, polyethylene, and other detergent materials. On the economic side, annual sales of petrochemicals tend to reach billions of dollars. Almost half of the petrochemical production is consumed, and the amount of export is fast increasing. Moreover, about 75% of exports all run down to the US, while other large markets include Europe, Japan, South America, and other Pacific nations.
When it comes down to costs, the petrochemical industry consumes some of the oil production and gas production as well. For operation costs of a petrochemical plant, the purchase of energy and feedstock would take around 50%. People working for petrochemical plants have jobs ranging from research scientists to equipment operators. There is also a notably higher percentage in productivity per worker because of the large investment in equipments.
The technology under the petrochemical industry engages in high pressures and temperatures, generally requiring world class engineering, not to mention the equipment, to be able to use the energy in an efficient manner. On the other hand, the government control can also have an effect in the industry. The price of gas and oil is especially crucial to the international competitiveness of the petrochemical industry.
When the environment is concerned, the petrochemical industry made its mark in controlling unwanted emissions from the plant. As compared to other resource industries, the emissions are quite low per unit of output. Usually gaseous, emissions can arise from production processes of the plant, from handling to storage. In addition, this particular industry does not generate large volumes of contaminated water, and is prevented from doing so.
The life span of this industry is infinite, for as long as the population continues to use and make use of such materials, this industry has enough oxygen to breath.
